The Croc is good because it's basically a free Sherman. Its flamethrower is also really good at weeding out infantry. Other than that it's basically just a Sherman.
In a 1v1, you usually buy a 30 cal squad at exactly 3 minutes, a marine squad at exactly 6 minutes, and a Croc at exactly 9 minutes. It's one of the reasons why 1v1s are somewhat stale. In team games, those timings go out the window, which is why they're more fun.
