“American Dream”: Food loaded into Dumpsters while Hundreds of Hungry Americans Restrained by Police

Hundreds of working-class people waiting outside of a closed grocery store for the possibility of getting the remaining food is not the picture of the “American Dream.” Yet on March 23, outside the Laney Walker Supermarket in Augusta, Ga., that is exactly what happened.

“American Dream” Food loaded into Dumpsters while Hundreds of Hungry Americans Restrained by Police

Residents filled the parking lot with bags and baskets hoping to get some of the baby food, canned goods, noodles and other non-perishables. But a local church never came to pick up the food, as the storeowner prior to the eviction said they had arranged. By the time the people showed up for the food, what was left inside the premises—as with any eviction—came into the ownership of the property holder, SunTrust Bank.

The bank ordered the food to be loaded into dumpsters and hauled to a landfill instead of distributed. The people that gathered had to be restrained by police as they saw perfectly good food destroyed. Local Sheriff Richard Roundtree told the news “a potential for a riot was extremely high.”

“People got children out here that are hungry, thirsty,” local resident Robertstine Lambert told Fox54 in Augusta. “Why throw it away when you could be issuing it out?”

SunTrust bank is trying to confuse the issue and not take direct responsibility for their actions. Their media relations officer Mike McCoy, stated, “We are working with store suppliers as well as law enforcement to dispose of the remaining contents of the store and secure the building.” Yet he also said that the food never belonged to SunTrust Bank.

There is no need to sugar coat what happened. Teresa Russell, chief deputy of the Marshal’s Office in Richmond County, said the owner of the building ordered that the food be taken to the landfill. Some people even followed the truck to the landfill and were still turned away.

In Richmond County, there are about 20 evictions per day, and the area surrounding the supermarket is one of the poorest in the state. According to the last available data, the poverty rate is 41 percent. Many people in that parking lot probably knew all too well how evictions work, and were in desperate need of the food assistance.

This story is not some bizarre exception. It reeks of the truth of capitalism and is strikingly similar to the H&M scandal that broke in 2010 when clothes were being shredded before being thrown away, so as to make sure the value of the merchandise was unaffected.

In a capitalist society, the motive behind the production of food is not to feed people, housing is not made to give them shelter, clothing is not made to keep them warm, and health care is not offered primarily to keep people healthy. All of these things, which are and should be viewed as basic rights, are nothing other than commodities—to be bought and sold—from which to make a profit. If a profit cannot be made, usually due to overproduction in relation to the market, the commodity is considered useless by the capitalist and destroyed.

In this case, it appears the bank simply did not care. For the banks that have made their profits through evictions and foreclosures, it is little surprise that they showed no remorse in leaving people staring in disbelief, with empty bags, as they watched the food that could be feeding their families dumped into a landfill instead.

Anti-capitalism much? This has NOTHING to do with capitalism!!!! Capitalism has helped feed the world! Instead, it has everything to do with the Marxists leaning rules within our government that has prohibited store owners from being able to write off as deductions unused items to the needy. Anything and everything they can do to create total government dependency is what this administration is creating. This has everything to do with the moral decay within our society that has been created by the long-held agenda of the “elitists” that, truthfully, do not fit in with a “capitalistic” moral society either!

mahomed, stop with the Zionist bull. Muslims don;t exactly have a stellar reputation iin how Christians and other religions are treated. Just remember how your Imams say they want to make this a Muslims state!

its not bull, unless you have been drinking too much of the Kool Aid.
the US is 100% Zionist Jew controlled.
and your stupid sons & daughters are fighting for the benefit of these parasites, killing innocent people around the world-cos times are hard & joining the military is the only job they can find.
then when those who are being invaded fight back, you call them terrorists & call the the stupid, gullible soldiers “heroes”

The way I heard it, Jesus was always on the side of the poor and needy. He didn’t scrutinize people who needed help in order to ascertain their worthiness or whatever. If people needed food, he fed them, period.
Why would anyone, especially a preacher, begrudge giving food to those in need ,so much that they would rather see it go into a landfill.?
What in the world are they teaching in seminary school these days?

Instead of trying to close down places like the Mother Theresa food kitchen (as they tried to do last week); the authorities in every city need to make sure that there is food responsibility. By that I mean that food, should be protected for these people. Why stop them from gathering what is there? They only things I would restrict are items in permeable containers, that could be contaminated. But cities are not taking responsibility in many cases for the waste of food that certainly should be protected and allowed for those who need it. Shame shame shame.

I hope these people and the rest of you understand that Obama is not taking care of business. He’s too busy giving billinos to foreign countreis who hate our living guts. He needs to take care of the people here who need, not a bunch of militant muslims who would cut our throats or worse just for being us.

Okay, banks, seriously, why did they deem that necessary? I’m Canadian, and Canada isn’t much better in terms of how capitalist we are, but holy crap. At least our bankers are human. I’m tempted to email that bank some hate mail. x.x

Rev, God will humble your attitude towards the poor, I agree with the other two comments. i was on welfare a long time, I don’t smoke, do drugs, drink, and I don’t even buy anything nice for myself. I haven’t even bought clothes for a long time. We also pay all our bills on time. Imagine that. Not every person on welfare is a bad lazy person. My husband works very hard to take care of me and my two sons, one being a newborn, and because he pays over $500 in taxes every week, we can’t even afford to pay our bills, let alone buy food, which is silly because now we don’t get food stamps because he is working from 5 am to 9 pm every day and somehow that should feed us and pay for medical. I can’t even get new glasses after my eye got permanently injured because we are trying to feed ourselves first. But you can lump us all in a group if you think you know all about welfare.

Alicia, while I can relate to you as to hard it is to be a working family with the extreme cost of living (and getting higher it seems daily), the $500 in taxes speaks to what should be a sufficient income level and perhaps some lifestyle changes would help even though, with Obama’s policies designed to destroy American capitalism, we’re all going to have to try to survive through it.

Looks more like Hundreds of welfare recipients waiting outside of a closed grocery store for the possibility of getting free food, so as to use their EBT cards for cash, drugs, or whatever.

rev., so what do welfare recipients “look like”? did you read the article? this is the “poorest” area in the state. how assuming you are to put a label on a group of people! shame on you! so (imo) you would rather have this food go to the landfill versus people have it being on welfare or otherwise?

the Rev might be 100% correct but that still does NOT change the fact that a LOT of good food is being thrown away- this is due to the way the economic/financial systems are run.
-all according to Zionist bankers & their interest ridden banking system.
and business owners are indebted to these parasites, so they follow their rules/laws

So much for John 7:24 – “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” Some “rev” you are.

We are all on welfare, some of us just slaves for it more than others. You’re heartless, and that is exactly what is coming your way. You’ll wish there was welfare very soon. Don’t believe me though, just watch. They hate us all, and you are no exception. You too will be humbled and have your dignity ripped from your Being. It’s coming. I wish for you a transformational blessing of understanding. May your soul become at peace.

Mary those of us who worked our asses off day in and day out just so the government can confiscate more and more of it are the SLAVES.

Suntrust Bank is evil. These people have no conscience. They are greedy. “The food is mine now and mine to do with as I please”. That’s their attitude. Join a member owned Credit Union and tell all banks to suck your furry …………………as the mean kitty said.

You know what Mahomed? Isaac and Ishmael were BROTHERS! There is no indication of strife between them when they came together to bury their father Abraham. A bit of contention between the mothers, yes as to whom was to be the father of what nation and where – that’s it! Believe it or not, their “seed” will once again be together in the end but NOT by the Muslim desire of a caliphate to rule the world! That is nothing more than hunger for power and hatred. Yeshua taught to “love your enemy”, and “pray for them that despitefully use you”. Christians are being murdered across the Muslim world right now, yet barely reported. Jews aren’t murdering ANYONE except those that are attacking them, which anyone would do! They keep handing over part of the land legitimately theirs in hopes of peaceful co-existence. What land is the Muslim world handing over to the Palestenians considering the mass amount of it they own and control in the Middle East? This HATRED speaks for itself as the Bible teaches us that Yahweh (goes to whom Abraham worshipped and Ishmael as well as Isaac in turn originally) “will bless those who bless you (Israel) and curse those that curse you”. Since Yahweh is the SUPREME Father, who are you more in fear of for the eternity of your soul – Him, or your Muslim brothers?

You’re a “Rev” of what? Certainly not Yahweh with that mindset! These people are poor and could use help. Why not try to get something that’s just going to the trash anyway? There is NOTHING wrong with that in any society, much less one that is supposed to be “a Christian nation”!
