"I WANT TO BE A PUPPETEER!" This was the last film I saw in a movie theatre, c. 1999. What messages and programming played out for me that went right over my head? In a way, I'm curious to re-watch, but in a way not. Ya know? It's not going to be uplifting.
Let's Roll Forums has an extensive thread on another evil film I consumed in ignorance- "My Own Private Idaho" with River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves. Back in the 90s, I remember my sister asking me to watch it to see if I could understand it and explain it to her. I was flumping clueless! Turns out it's a story of a mind-control slave (Phoenix) and his handler (Reeves.) Phoenix played a prostitute who suffered 'narcolepsy' every time he dissociated. Sick, sick, sick. I remember the clerk at the video rental place telling us it was one of the best films he'd ever seen in his life.
I am going to revisit this movie. Charlie Kaufman, the writer, also did Adaptation, and Eternal Sunshine Of the Spotless Mind. All 3 movies are bizarre. Wonder what I missed in them years ago. I'd like to find out! I got some re-watching to do……..
