Cell phones may be linked to cancer and one Florida city just passed a resolution to warn their residents of these health dangers. It has only been under a decade that widespread cell phone use has come into vogue, so long-term studies just don’t exist yet. In May the World Health Organization reported that there could be a risk of cancer due to cell phone use, according to Local 10.com, on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012.

Enough information does exist to prompt WHO to make that claim and one city in Florida, took this into consideration when a citizen asked them to pass this resolution. Pembroke Pines City commission heard resident Jimmy Gonzalez plea to warn residents after he had tumors removed from the left side of his head, his left hand and on his left side near his hip. These are all the places that the cellphone pressed against Gonzalez’s body for long periods of times.

The resolution passed by Pembroke Pines is different than a law or ordinance. The resolution doesn’t impose rules or issues fines if residents are non-compliant. This is just a warning with suggestions of texting or emailing in lieu of a phone call and it also suggests keeping the cell phone and inch away from their body. The Pine’s Mayor Frank Ortis said, “We worry about all aspects of life in our great city.”

Some in the city are all for this warning, while others thought the commission crossed a line and took this too far. “I think that’s crossing the line,” said resident Shelly Grocher. The mayor said that “the city can’t legislate human behavior, but encourages everyone to be informed.”
