I'm 13 and quite interested in history and have a good idea on what happened in WW1. It was a very interesting period.
I think most kids don't know about WW1 because most schools focus on the more recognizable WW2. Also, most US schools focus wars the US fought, and WW1 didn't have much US involvement.
