Europe Prior to World War I: Alliances and Enemies I PRELUDE TO WW1 – Part 1/3

Pakalert August 1, 2014 40

To understand World War One completely, you need to understand what happened before. In 1914, Europe was on the verge of modernity. The German Reich, France, Great Britain and Austria-Hungary were fighting over influence and colonies. Russia was gaining more and more power while the Ottoman Empire was only a shadow of its former self. Meanwhile, smaller nations were striving towards independence to fulfil their dream of being an sovereign state. In our first special episode about the prelude to World War 1, Indy explains what Europe was like in 1914.

Can't help but see the likeness of Christopher Hitchens in the host's face and build. If my history professors had been half as handsome, I'd have had a perfect attendance record. Lawrdy. fans self

Please don't refer to Britain as England because there's 4 countries in Britain not just England

Bismarck believed that there were 5 major European powers (Brittan & France in the west, Prussia (Germany) & Austria in the center, Russia in the east) & Prussia (Germany) should always be allied with 2 of these powers. He also believed that these allies should be dependant on Prussia (Germany) in some way.

Great videos, although saying 'England' instead of the UK/GB does really jar at times. Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish and even people from the now Republic of Ireland might feel a little excluded considering that every part of these islands contributed to the British war effort.

Why use words like "pissed everyone off"? It makes it impossible to use in my classroom! If we can't use it in class, what's the point of it?

"around 300 episodes" Well, you've already surpassed 300, and considering there's a full two years left, I'm going estimate that there's going to be about 100-150 more episodes.

this is eerily reminiscent of the troubles we are having today. I can only wish our leaders know their history so we don't head towards another world war.

May have been a bit conservative in guessing the amount of episodes. Over 300 already. Just shows how great this channel is.

You should do a series on the commanders of both sides.  Lots and lots of raging to be bound of these horrible commanders and most of whom were just plain bad people.

Imagine a britain and germany union it'd been unbeatable because most that likely that'd also meant the USA would've been part of that alliance

If you enjoy these videos I HIGHLY recommend John Keegan's "The First World War" for more insight into Serbia's role in this and how it could have been kept to a "limited war.

Indy…a question, after Nov 2018 when the channel will be over as you said…can you do episodes on the post war world and world war II? I find your shows enchanting , intoxicating ,basically brilliantly put for the public to understand and enhance their knowledge on the great war.

I am not really sure that the problems of Austria-Hungary were the differences and the anti-Austrian sentiment among Slavs. If you read the book written by Jörn Leonhard and Ulrike von Hirschhausen (2011), one of the most interesting suggestions of them is the one regarding the method in History of the last century: it can be that our History, methodologically speaking, was dominated by nationalistic narratives. They thinks that it is really improbable that the majority of the populations were awared of the national sentiment (I mean, inside the Empire). Just think about the Hungarians, the Poles, the Bosnians that fought fiercely for the glory of their Emperor.
Maybe the big deal in the Empire was the bureaucracy, infact the communications were really really slow because of the huge system of offices. Of course, it was something linked with the fact that the Empire was old and governed by an old Emperor. But his myth throught the people was quite solid. I remember my grand-grandmother speak very well about "Uncle Franz" and my native city (Gorizia, Görz) has also now this positive figure in their mind. For sure, melancholy of the past is one ingredient here, really an anthropological matter.
But, another example: if we want to think about the Bosnians, after just 30-40 years of domination they were awared of the great opportunities that the Empire gave them, for example the education for all. So they became quite "supporters" of their rulers.
So, my opinion is that the visions about the internal problems of the Empire were developed in History inside a framework of nationalistic discourses (Foucault's types of discourses). Maybe we have to re-analyze these narratives.
Thank you very much for the videos, they are great and your presentation-mood is amazing!

i've had this bookmarked for years, and tonight, I begin! Just finished EP 1 and already engrossed. I've read tons of historical analysis and personal accounts of WW2, Korea, Vietnam, and the Civil War, and 1812, but for some reason have never touched WW1 (beyond the things "everyone" knows, lightly). Time to learn
