German East Africa – World War 1 Colonial Warfare I THE GREAT WAR Special

Pakalert March 15, 2016 33

The military campaign in German East Africa during World War 1 went on longer than the whole war and thanks to Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck and his guerilla warfare is now infamous among the theatres of the great war. But what was the history behind German East Africa and was it really a gentleman’s war and what role did the Askari play in it?

Will there be any specials on the Rhodesian Native Regiment? I was brought up in a family who had ties to the Rhodesian African Rifles and who have always spoken highly of the native soldiers. There has also been a monument opened on the 100th anniversary of the RNR in the National Memorial Arboretum. It would be nice to hear more, and share more about the soldiers of the empire.

As you can see it wasn't just white men from Europe who committed rape or murder but also africans as well. And they all have on thing in common they were "men" who killed their fellow brothers in cold blood.

Is it true that some men from the tribes of askaris would join battles in their native, tribal outfits and would carry spears and shields. I remember reading it on the battle of Tanganyika.

Are you going to make a video about colonial soldiers in the Western Front? It would be interesting to know about the French, German, and British colonial subjects in the Western Front.
