Immigrants Bracing for Raids, Deportations

The Trump administration’s new plan for enforcing immigration laws revealed on Tuesday has the nation bracing for mass deportation. “We are bracing ourselves for increased raids, increased detention of our family members, of our community members,” said Marielena Hincapié, executive director of National Immigration Law Center. The administration has denied that the memos issued by the Department of Homeland Security would lead to mass deportations, but should be used as a guide to immigration officials on how to carry out Trump’s executive orders. DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program is still in tact, but the administration estimates that the orders would affect approximately 1 million people in the U.S. Immigration activists are trying to assure people that the memos need to go through the federal regulation process before they can go into effect. Even so, “the administration is now saying that anybody can be detained so any ICE agent can decide who they’re going to go after with no restraints on that,” Hincapié said. This is making anyone who might be undocumented afraid to do simple things, like go to the grocery store or drive a car, in case they are pulled over and asked for documentation.
