My Grandmother raised 9 kids without a husband who died from a stroke during the depression and I assure you from the stories my Aunts and Uncles told me they all scrabbled looking for any kind of work that would put money in their pockets that they could take home to Mamaw to keep the family alive. My Mother quit school in the 5th Grade to work for a dime store as a clean up girl. Her proudest accomplishment was that she worked her way up to soda jerk which meant more money plus she could eat at the counter. She often took home food that customers had left behind and her brothers and sisters ate leftover sandwiches with bites taken out of them and were grateful for them.
