The Shape of the Future

In my younger days I was a “HAM” radio operator, K1FJS. My hang out was the 20 meter band. Since we used crystals that were made to a specific frequency, it was easy to make a perfectly tuned antenna with some copper wire. You divided the speed of light (299,792,458 meters per second) by the frequency you wanted to target (in Hz). The result was in meters and you could make your piece of wire by using a quarter of this length.

That being said, the best antenna I ever used was the metal drainpipes and gutters on my family’s Cape Cod house. I contacted over 100 countries using this odd configuration and just 50 watts… as long as it didn’t rain or get covered by snow. The point here is that antennae have a way of combining their contorted radiating surfaces that can sometimes perform better than a straight piece of wire.

If you’ve ever broken a cell phone, you have no doubt seen the strange shaped antenna that makes communication between the phone and the tower possible. These oddly shaped conductors are designed by computers and usually can radiate signals on a broad range of frequencies, instead of just one. It’s a fairly new technology which only became viable in the last decade — about the time when your mobile phone became your cell phone.

A pioneer in this field is Nathan Cohen, the inventor and patent holder of fractal antennae. Nathan had his “drainpipe” moment when he fabricated an aluminum foil antenna using a fractal pattern to hide it from his landlord, who prohibited antennae on his property. Nathan was surprised that it worked at all, yet he successfully communicated with another “HAM” operator on the 2 meter band.

The idea blossomed and today, fractal antenna systems are the cutting edge of radiant communication systems. And this brings us to HAARP — or I should say, “ionosphere heaters” like HAARP.

Those of us familiar with “dark technology” like HAARP are used to seeing football size antennae farms with hundreds of towers and aluminum dipoles. But that’s an era of the past.

Enter the new era:

Something weird, yet familiar, can be found at 43°04’51.75″N/92°48’26.85″E.

First, notice the scale. Those little rectangular things are big trucks.

The staff there must get pretty bored because there is evidence of joy-riding on the tarmac. The “embedded conductors” are used like an obstacle course, leaving signs of tire wear on them — especially in tight turns. Those illuminated figure “8” shapes are puzzling. We sometimes see truck tracks in them also.

At first we thought this site was a runway. Perhaps it was designed to look that way, but some professional pilots who reviewed these photos noticed several oddities that would appear to discourage that assumption. There are no approach lights, no traces of wheels striking the runway — and the runway itself is far too small with many obstructions (like the huge saucer shaped thing) to allow all but a light drone to land here… No, it’s not a runway. But then, what is it?

Then there are those weird shapes on the “arms” of the structure. They are oddly symmetrical, like the new antennae designs. We ran this by Nathan Cohen and he agreed.

“What it is is two banks of three arrays for two separate bands, and one bank of two arrays for another. You can’t tell the operational frequencies from the spacings. The panels are many wavelengths across, but we dont know how many. It is a multiband array antenna farm with flat array panels. If we knew the operational frequencies I could tell you the gain. Not an Arecibo but still not too shabby would be my guess. Could be an imaging radar for satellite monitoring.”

The surrounding area reveals no power sources for the complex, but there is reason enough to believe that the works are hidden underground. The nearest village is called “Jiefang” (Liberation) “Kan’erjing” (underground caverns).

The idea of high gain, cutting egde antennae, aiming up towards the ionosphere, seems to imply that this facility is designed for a purpose similar to Alaska’s HAARP facility. It’s not that far fetched. China has numerous and amazing things that can be seen from studying google-earth. There are cities — huge and so modern that they look like something out of Star Trek — that are all empty and far removed from any other civilization. There are thousands of square miles of wind generators, weird Area-51 like places that we reported on back in November 2011.

    A few more notes on this site.

    I found a total of 4 circles with center markers and 4 triangles. I used the path tool in Google Earth and drew a line from the triangles and circles toward the “base” and found that they line up down the center of the runways. It would seem they were used when the surveying and grading work was being to provide visual markers to work from. It seems this airport was built in two phases. The symbols are different in order to reduce confusion during surveying. The uppermost crossing runways line up with the triangles. The bottommost crossing runways line up with the circles.

    As for the bottomost runway, you will note that the runway itslef has a section that hangs out over the bottom portion of the point. This is different than the runway above. A close inspection shows that this was originally intended to be extended out, and was graded, but the concrete was never poured.

    A few notes on approach lights, radar and other missing items one would expect. It appears that this airport was built to serve smaller passenger (think Beechcraft 1900D) and smaller commuter style planes. Landing the 1900D there would be tricky, and taking it off even tricker, but it could be done. The smaller commuter type planes would be fine. Approach lights are only necessary for night landings and as we have no night pictures, the 3 meter data provided by Google is not high enough resolution to rule out the existence of basic lights on the approach. As for radar, Urumqui has an airport that can handle landing commercial size aircraft and undoubtedly provides coverage for the airspace around it including the Dongliangcun airport and the .

    There are several industrial sites in the area, including coal mines, chemical refineries, and other . I clicked on many of the pictures of surrounding area and what I found was that this location has likely changed little since Pre-World War II days. With the addition of electricity (there are quite a number of backbone transmission lines nearby) things are becoming less rurual, but all that seperates this area from the Gobi Desert is a Mountain range to its north.

    The area to the northwest of the airfield is a coal mining area with considerable surface strip mining. One of the pictures of the train that moves coal from the Sandaoling Coal mines is of a Type JS Steam Locomotive with tender car that is still in use to move its freight. While this makes sense that since it is moving coal that this fuel is readily available and therefore there is little reason to change this. The Type JS was based on the Type JF chassis, originally designed in 1918 in the United States by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO). The Type JS was produced from 1957 until the late 1980’s. The picture of the one I saw was JS6204, the fourth engine manufactured in the second production phase for this engine, beginning in 1981.

    There are stark contrasts here between the rural and city areas. With a number of cities nearby, it would seem that this site serves as a regional airport for the surrounding towns and the city of Kumul.

    Kumul City- 365,000 people

    With the entire prefecture of Kumul having around 542,000 people total. With the closest airport over 266 miles away, it would make sense that this area have a regional airport.

    Now all of this information came from a few basic reliable sources on the web. I finally decided to see how well I had done so I turned on the transportation–>airports layer in google earth and it revealed that the location was an airport called “Yaerbashi”

    So I looked that up. Wikimapia had an entry for it.

    This seemed odd to me given that it had what appeared to be a driving course painted on the runways, so I checked with the airportdatabase.

    It reports that the airport has no scheduled service. It also doesn’t show it as being a military airport. Several of the sites refer to it as the Yaerbashi Test Range.

    Interestingly enough, a company called “Private Jets Charter” can schedule time on the runway for private aircraft visiting the area.

    While zone interdite seems to think that they are still running JianJiao 5s (JJ5) (MiG 17) trainer and shows the airspace as restricted.

    While there is plenty of room left for speculation, the use of this site as a fractal antenna is a bit far off the path. Last but not least, if you are building an antenna, even a fractal antenna it must put some distance between itself and the ground plane. There is no evidence here of anything being raised off the surface of the runway, nor of any of the materials that would be required to make an antenna work. The final death of this theory is the undwhelming amount of electricity that serves this facility. An antenna like that would require an industrial size amount of power, and that means power lines, or if its being generated on-site, storage for fuel. Our The HAARP facility for instance is using around 3 Megawatts. Our 2000 kVA generator goes through 1600 gallons of diesel in continuous run mode over a 7 day period. You can imagine how much fuel and generators would be required to power something like that. There is no visible evidence that this is happening.

    I think the most interesting thing is to look at the facility to the south of the concrete area. If you use the Google time options feature to look back at 2006, you can compare the facility against the more recent 2010 image. What you will find is that quite a bit of construction and several new buildings and additional perimeter fencing have been installed south of the “base” area. Also, if you look at the panoramio photos taken near the site you will notice that there are several pictures of the “base” for lack of a better word. One of the more prominent features is a tall observation tower. If you look at the 10/24/2006 image you will see thata there are several tall objects in the compound, as they cast long shadows to the north. In the 2010 image you will see holes have been dug to pour new pilings for an additional building.

    Also, in the 2010 image, which has a great deal more contrast, you will see tire maneuvering marks on the crossing southeast runways and parking positions for aircraft.

    Also, at the north side of this base as you head toward the “runways”, you will find around 14 concrete bunker hangars. They have side overhangs to support rolling doors and have rounded tops, which can be seen in the shadows they cast. The fact that there are no aircraft here only means only that:

    1. They know what time the surveillance is overhead and outside operations are limited to times where this is not occuring.
    2. They keep any aircraft on ready status in the bunker hangars.

    As to the lack of landing marks, it is entirely possible that the Chinese J-18 VTOL fighter or rotor wing aircraft use this site. It could also be a testing ground site.

    The “runways” shown in the pictures are a mere 880m or 2,887.14′. The top-most “V” is arranged at an angle of 120 degrees with the north-northwest oriented runway along a 110 degree heading and the north northeast oriented runway along a 230 degree heading. The bottom-most “V” is also arranged at an angle of 120 degrees with the south-southwest oriented runway along a 50 degree heading, and the south-southeast runway along a 290 degree heading. Where they are crossed they form a 60 degree angle both east and west. This is true for both configurations of runways. The main taxiway is 1,630 meters or 5347.77′ or a little over a mile long which is oriented along a heading of 351.6 degrees, and not the 360 that you would expect, although this could be laid out along a magnetic heading and not an absolute heading.

    On the southern most crossing set of runways, the parking spaces on the north-northeast section are marked out in the following dimensions: (W) 29.68m/97.38′ (L) 25.13m/82.4′. The bunkers at the south end of the runway mentioned above have the following dimensions: (W) 21m/69′ (L)21m/69′. The hangar door covers at the front are 33m/108′ wide from end to end.

    Also it would seem that the prevailing wind direction in this area is from north to southas most of the dustoff from the exposed areas of the “figure 8’s” trails away to the south. Finally as to the oddly shaped marks on the upper most runways, they show signs of rubber marks at each of the points where you would expect a vehicle to be turning along one, mainly at the corners and not in the straight areas. This happens when vehicles such as heavy trucks shift their weight during a rapid turn. The circles in this picture have a average inner diameter of 22m/72′ and a average outer diameter of 29m/95′ with 3.5m/11.5′ width . The straight areas are on average 38.5m/126.3′ long and 3.5m wide. The corresponding figure 8’s have similar dimensions.

    Finally the odd “bird or angel shaped” objects on the runway, measure (W)64.68m/212.2′ (L)32.09m/105.28′.

    Now there are a few things that are missing here that lead me to believe this may once have been used for aircraft, but no longer is. There are no easily identifiable radar structures, although one is suspiciously round enough to qualify, which you would expect to find. I also see very little in the way of fuel storage, or of munitions bunkers although these are easily hidden at this resolution. I also note that there is a significant amount of degredation of the tarmac in front of the hangar areas leading me to believe that they have been disused for a while.

    Finally a few odd things in the photo. I pulled back and looked to the east and west of the site. If you pan out to around 3600 feet, and look to the west, you will see a circle. In the center is a smaller circle and the number 89 written within it in Chinese. To the north and slightly to the west of it is a triangle. The circle is 51m/167′ outer diameter with a 41m/134′ inner diameter, maming the circle about 5m in width. The triangle is an equilateral triangle with 50m/164′ sides, with its norternmost point oriented along a heading of 355 degrees. Its southeast pointing tip however is aligned with the top-most runway that is oriented along a 110 degree heading. Perhaps it is a “Here it is” for VFR flight operations. What the significance of the 89 is I have yet to determine, but undoubtedly has to do with a heading or perhaps it is a reference to the site itself. There are several more of these markers around the area, some with numbers in latin letters as well. to the northeast of the site there is a circle similar to the other one, with the number 36 to its south east. The circle has a 41m/134′ outer diameter. Below that ans slightly to its south is a number 37 roughly scratched and minimally visible. Outside the base several more of these circles exist, which have a 51m/167′ outer diameter

    Anyway, I might tend to agree with Darrell that it is now being used to train in the operation of military vehicles given that many of the indicators of an active flight operation are missing, although the additional building that were added to the southern most portion of the site seem strage if it has been recommisioned for what would seem a lesser purpose.

    These modern Nazca Lines are a series of ancient geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert in southern Peru…. oh ahhh oops …China Desert.. These giant high tech antennas are zoomorphic designs (more to come) are to intice UFO’s to land so they can communicate with aliens and gather technology. Pretty easy work for a unlimited Government expense. Immitating the ancient Perveurians is currently in the barbaric stages but given enough investment and efforts they plan to get a UFO to visit.
