The World At War-Episode 05.Barbarossa (June – December 1941) World War II Documentary

5 “Barbarossa (June – December 1941)” 21 November 1973
After dominating southeastern Europe through force or intrigue, Germany begins Operation Barbarossa, the massive invasion of Soviet Union. Despite several quick victories, the invasion ultimately stalls after a failed assault on Moscow during Russia’s harsh winter. Interviewees include General Walter Warlimont, Albert Speer, Paul Schmidt, Grigori Tokaty and W. Averell Harriman.

The series has 26 episodes. Producer Jeremy Isaacs asked Noble Frankland, then director of the Imperial War Museum, to list fifteen main campaigns of the war and devoted one episode to each. The remaining eleven episodes are devoted to other matters, such as the rise of the Third Reich, home life in Britain and Germany, the experience of occupation in the Netherlands, and the Nazis’ use of genocide. Episode 1 begins with a cold open describing the massacre at the French village of Oradour-sur-Glane by the Waffen SS.

The same event is referenced again at the end of Episode 26 and the series ends with Laurence Olivier uttering the poignant word, “Remember”.

8:489:02 how could the Romanian oil wells of Ploesti be Germany's only oil supply for it's war effort when Romania was an independent country. Romania may have been a German satellite, but it was still a sovereign nation and it was allowed to govern it's own affairs. Romania may been friendly to Germany, but it was not under German political and military occupation at least not in 1940-41.

I watched the "World at War" series when it came out in the mid 1970's.  I got the Box Set in VHS and later on DvD when it first came available.  I have a huge military library lining the walls of one spare bedroom.  This series is probably the best of ALL documentary series ever made.  Sir Laurence Olivier was a perfect choice for the narration.  "Old guys" like me are sadly going to die out soon and then the "politically correct" revision of WW2 will be the official line since almost all the vets of WW2 are no longer among the living.  Cherish this series and try to make it available to your grandchildren who will see it as almost ancient history.  I have asked my daughter, a 35 year old Junior High School teacher to try and make sure my Library and memorabilia stays intact, in worthy hands.  This History will die with us old guys.  I've worked over 36 years with the DoD and studied Military history for over 40 years.  Keep History Alive!  Don't let political correctness become the official history, but rather keep history alive with truth, warts and all.

The USA supplied a massive amount of lend lease to the USSR which led to the defeat Hitler yet Patton wanted to destroy the Soviets in 1945 when they had the chance talk about madness and supplying your true enemy.

If Japan and Germany had signed a pact before operation Barbarossa then why did the Japanese not keep the pressure on the Russian eastern front and tying down the Russian winter divisions? The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor instead and gave Russia the troops it needed to fight the Germans. Seems like the Japanese and the Germans had a very arms length relationship.
