"Obsess" *might* be the wrong word, but writing songs and having nightmares (I've read about that from multiple sources) indicates an unhealthy… level of concern about something you really have no control over.

As an indication of how "we the people" had no control over nuclear deployment, remember the unilateral disarmament movement in England, Europe & the Left Coast in the 1980s. Nevertheless, Reagan, Thatcher and Helmut Kohl installed GLCMs and IRBMs in Europe to counter SS-20s.

I find it funny that you completely missed his sarcasm. If you actually thought he really meant that WWIII was "almost upon us". you obviously never had a chance of being one of those "intellectuals" you were so derisive of. Not to mention the fact that Tom Lehrer is pretty humble (compared to a normal person, let alone a songwriter nowadays).

Dryly cynical and a bit jaded, maybe, but that's not the same as sarcastic.

(Being old enough to remember when WW3 was a real worry, I can with confidence assert that, so soon after the Cuban Missile Crisis and in the middle of the Vietnam War and before détente, that the likelihood of him being sarcastic there is *minimal*.)

Actually I think he was referring to bomber planes. ICBMs cut the time down to about 20 minutes.

But they also don't launch missiles at other countries. They just stay home. 🙂

For the first war *to* be shown on TV, the Vietnam War was only marginally better. The Northern Hemisphere wasn't destroyed, but I think America's traditional values fell for good.

'As you know, World War 3 will be the first world war to be shown on television.'

Decades before CNN gave us 24 hour coverage of the first gulf war Lehrer accurately predicted how the media would turn warfare into just another form of entertainment.
