Video: Giant Asteroid Flies By Earth

2

Beginning at 4:30 Pacific (7:30 Eastern) you can watch a live embed feed from the Slooh Space Camera.

The show will start with images from the Slooh telescope in the Canary Island. For all the latecomers, another telescope in Arizona will start tracking the asteroid at around 8 p.m. Pacific (11 Eastern) as well. Slooh will have discussion with their very own Patrick Paolucci, Astronomy magazine columnist Bob Berman, and astronomer Matt Francisco from Prescott Observatory.

The asteroid, known as 2002 AM31 was discovered 10 years ago by Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR). It is a fairly large near-Earth asteroid — about 3,000 feet wide — and will come within about 3.2 million miles of Earth, or roughly 14 times the Earth-moon distance. Because of its size and distance, the object is classified as “potentially hazardous,” though it has zero chance of hitting Earth.

Another space rack (say it and your in the upper midwest!). Wouldnt that be funny if a giant spaceship, 3 or 4 times bigger than the rack, pulled up along side it, a big door opened and on an arm appeared a giant razor blade that cut the rack up into powdery lines and then a big straw came out of the ship and sucked it all up? LOL

Today, Monday, July 23, 2012, I got up from sleep at 7.30 after a very disturbing dream. I saw moon with only a slight blob of light at the outer core and this light was receding, as if the moon was setting for the earth-viewer. However within second, all of a sudden, the entire circle of moon was aglow with bright light. I got up fearing this is Armageddon. in my dream I check time and its was 4.30. However, when I woke up and instantly checked the time, it was 7.30. I am not a star gazer; nor too much involved with astronomy. It was therefore puzzling for me to chance on the news of this steroid.
