During early November, 2011, the Earth will pass directly through the plane and debris field from ELENIN, an apparent long-period Comet C/2010 X1, only just discovered by amateur Russian astronomer Leonid Elenin during December 10, 2010. Some are predicting a catastrophic event while the November date 11/11/11 presents itself, while others laugh it off as a ridiculous fear mongering non-event.
Comet ELENIN is officially classified as a ‘PHO’, a Potentially Hazardous Object. Some say that the comets name, ELENIN, eerily stands for Extinction Level Event Notable Impact November. Others say the name is mysteriously encoded to mean Elevin Nine (Nov. 9).
How big is Comet ELENIN?
The nucleus (the core, the middle, or the solid irregular ball of ‘stuff’ itself) of a comet can range from about 100 meters to more than 40 kilometers across. They are made of rock, dust, water-ice, and frozen gases such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane and ammonia.
As a comet approaches the inner solar system, solar radiation causes the materials of the comet to vaporize and stream out of the nucleus. The streams of particles and gas form a huge atmosphere around the comet called the coma, and the force of the Sun’s radiation and solar wind on the coma cause an enormous tail to form, which will always points away from the sun.
Having said that, so how big is Comet ELENIN? Reports vary, ranging from 20,000 to 50,000 miles! Now before you dive into your underground shelter, these observations are based on the visible ‘coma’, the part which will leave behind a debris field which Earth will actually pass through during early November. Whereas the nucleus – core, will certainly be much smaller. However, even those estimates vary, ranging from 2 to 7 miles in diameter. The astronomer who discovered it is guessing around 4 km. NASA has apparently not offered a definitive number.
The fact is, they apparently don’t know for sure…

The closest the comet will come to Earth will be during October 16 when it will be 0.23 AU (Astronomical Units), or 21 million miles from Earth (according to NASA). The Earth will then later pass through its comet tail debris field in early November.

As ELENIN zips past Earth on October 16, it will be traveling more than 53,000 mph!
Will the Earth be at risk to collide with any of Comet ELENIN’s debris during November?
Well, yes it will. The question really is, how large (or small) will be the debris?
Most say that the debris field will be made up of such small particles that we won’t even know it here on Earth. However, there are others who believe that impact with larger debris is inevitable. Since their is not a clear definition as to the true size of the comet, it’s difficult to predict the extent of any potential collisions with debris.
In conclusion, there are mountains of controversy and conspiracy swirling about the internet regarding Comet ELENIN, some of which is intriguing to read, ranging from government-built underground shelters for the elite to survive the catastrophe, to the recent number of strong earthquakes, to being remotely controlled by an alien power, to having to do with a brown-dwarf star lurking within our solar system, to Planet X, Niburu…
Whatever the excuse, why not stock up on food, water, and supplies? Sounds like as good a reason as any at the moment
Or, perhaps dig yourself an underground shelter to shield yourself from flaming debris raining down from the atmosphere on November 9… If nothing else, it will make for a good root cellar.
