Texas Congressman Threatens Obama With Impeachment If He Uses Exec. Orders on Guns

Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX) threatened Monday to file articles of impeachment against President Obama if he uses executive orders to institute gun control measures, the Daily Caller reported.

Stockman said such executive orders would be “unconstitutional” and would “infringe on our constitutionally-protected right to keep and bear arms.”

“I will seek to thwart this action by any means necessary, including but not limited to eliminating funding for implementation, defunding the White House, and even filing articles of impeachment,” he said in a statement.

Politico reported Monday that according to Joe Biden, the White House has 19 executive orders ready for Obama to act unilaterally on gun control.

“The executive actions could include giving the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention authority to conduct national research on guns, more aggressive enforcement of existing gun laws and pushing for wider sharing of existing gun databases among federal and state agencies, members of Congress in the meeting said,” Politico added.

Stockman, however, sees Obama’s use of executive orders as nothing less than an attack on the Constitution and Americans themselves, requiring swift and strong legislative action.

“Any proposal to abuse executive power and infringe upon gun rights must be repelled with the stiffest legislative force possible,” he said. “Under no circumstances whatsoever may the government take any action that disarms any peaceable person — much less without due process through an executive declaration without a vote of Congress or a ruling of a court.”

“If the president is allowed to suspend constitutional rights on his own personal whims, our free republic has effectively ceased to exist,” he added.

The White House has declined to comment on the details of Obama’s proposals, Politico said.
