Anti-corporate rallies intensify in EU

Hundreds of anti-corporatism protesters have camped out in public places across major cities in Europe for a third consecutive day, to rally against the inequalities caused by the eurozone crisis.

Demonstrators, inspired by America’s Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement, have set up tents in Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Madrid as well as London, AFP reported on Monday.

In Frankfurt, protesters have established a makeshift village in front of the European Central Bank, while Dutch demonstrators have erected outside the Amsterdam stock exchange.

The OWS movement began on September 17 in the financial district of New York City in protest at a number of issues including the wars in the Middle East, US financial crisis and high bonuses for Wall Street executives.

On Saturday, demonstrations erupted in 951 cities in 82 countries in Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Protesters have adopted the motto “We are the 99 percent.” They use the slogan to call attention to the fact that they are treated different than the one percent of Americans that are in possession of most of the nation’s wealth.

Another major protest is planned for October 29, ahead of the G20 summit in Paris.
