Be Prepared

Be Prepared‘ is an underlying theme of many posts on this website and is a (the) goal after having accessed the risks that surround you, both near and far.

The Scout Motto happens to be BE PREPARED which means you are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your DUTY.

Be Prepared in Mind by having disciplined yourself to be obedient to every order, and also by having thought out beforehand any accident or situation that might occur, so that you know the right thing to do at the right moment, and are willing to do it.

Be Prepared in Body by making yourself strong and active and able to do the right thing at the right moment, and do it.

The scout motto implies obedience to a higher authority when it calls out ‘duty’ and ‘obedient to every order’. Whether you report to a higher authority or not, the rest of it certainly is relevant… ‘having thought out beforehand any accident or situation that might occur…’

This is the precise key to survival preparedness in general. To think about, or become aware of the risk situations that currently exist, or may exist in the future, so that you can plan ahead and prepare for what is coming or may come.

It is obviously a very general theme or motto, but that’s OK, because it is the general notion of being prepared that we focus on here, while applying the thought to many different aspects and examples.

I believe that the first step to ‘be prepared’, no matter what aspect of life we’re talking about, is to become aware. Recognizing risk apparently does not come naturally to many folks. We are all creatures of habit and become trapped in our own routines of life, and unless we force ourselves to look outside the box, we will never see what’s out there.

Becoming aware of our surrounding risks involves more than devoting 30 minutes a day to watching or listening to the main stream news (many people don’t even do that much…). Broadening your ‘input’ to information will open you eyes to more points of view. Soon, you will start thinking for yourself as you hear and sort out alternate points of view and assessments of the news at hand. Once you begin to truly think for yourself, you will formulate better opinions and will be able to better prepare for what may actually happen as events unfold.

No one can see the future, but some are much better than others at predicting the future.
