I'm not sure about the the other models but the B model f-35 is sure to become a very versatile aircraft

Refueled FIFTEEN times while crossing the Atlantic… requiring TWO of the largest refueling birds we have in the inventory to get THREE fighters across the pond? Is that typical fuel economy or are the F-35Bs (or all of the F-35s?) disproportionately thirsty? How many refuelings would an F-16, F-18E/F, or F-15 need for the same trip?

Retired boom operator… (6 years KC-135, 14 years KC-10). .. a note about drogue refueling and the 15 times refueling. It's all based on a few factors. Here are a couple….
1) Divert bases.. if something happens and the fighter can't refuel, he has to have enough in his tanks to climb to performance altitude to burn less fuel, and glide, if necessary, to reach a divert base. The divert base normally determines the times for refueling.
2) amount of fuel transfer per minute. i know with Harriers, and i can almost say F-35's too, a transfer rate of 1,000 lbs per minute is a constant going thru the hose. Based on that, after the last jet is refueled, its time to refuel again 15 to 20 minutes later. (longer break time as they approach the Azores (Lajes AB) as a divert base.
Your channel never ceases to please the eye with shots of this wonderful 5th gen airplane. Certainly the best aerial footage I've ever seen of the F-35B. Thanks for sharing. Can't wait for more.
