The director of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has warned that the number of those joining the al-Qaeda-linked militants in Syria is growing in the United States.
James Comey said at a press conference in Washington on Friday that more and more people were going from the US and other countries to Syria so as to join the militants.
He said that the people who travel from the United States and other countries to fight in Syria may become radicalized.
Comey stated the situation is similar to that in Afghanistan during the 10-year Soviet occupation, adding that the issue poses a threat to the US national security since the hardcore militants could attempt to pull off another 9/11 in the US.
“All of us with a memory of the ’80s and ’90s saw the line drawn from Afghanistan in the ’80s and ’90s to Sept. 11,” he said. “We see Syria as that, but an order of magnitude worse,” because more foreign militants are crossing into Syria.
“We are determined not to let lines be drawn from Syria today to a future 9/11,” he added.
Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since 2011. According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the unrest. The United States and its allies are reportedly supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
A British defense study published last year by IHS Jane’s showed that about 100,000 militants, fragmented into 1,000 groups, are fighting in Syria against the government and people.
The extracts of the study by defense consultancy IHS Jane’s were published on September 16, 2013, revealing that some 10,000 militants were fighting for groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and the rest fighting for different militant groups.
The analysis also said that a large number of extremists from foreign countries are also active in Syria.

When the FBI issues a warning that a second 9/11 can happen, it sounds more like a script to the second act of a play.
When 9/11 happened, I took it at face value and considered people calling it a false flag as the tin foil hat crowd. The problem is the FACT that jet fuel CANNOT melt steel.
Since the explained cause is INCAPABLE of accomplishing what they claimed, it can only be the first act of this on-going play…The warning of another 9/11 suggests the second act may soon unfold…
For goodness sakes did you not think this was a possibility? After all the US is making more and more enemies everyday with its drone bombings and other military operations in the Middle East. For every one possible “terrorist”, it kills two dozen civilians. For every civilian there are thirty or more relatives and friends who become new enemies of America. Just count the numbers. The US potential terrorist problem was made in Washington and the Pentagon, no where else.
