Greatest Depression in California: People Begin Living Without Electricity and Water

Pakalert July 27, 2010 9

I couldn’t find statistics for local utility shut offs in my area, but I knew we would start to see more and more of this.

Houses everywhere are going vacant. People don’t say goodbye, they don’t leave a number, they just disappear. With their disappearance we add another vacant house to the street. But families living in housing without utilities is a new sight for me to behold. I spoke recently with a rep from So Cal Edison who, full time contacts residence who have had their electricity turned off due to non payment. She has a negotiator sent in and they work on a reduced payment. It’s amazing to me, that now, it is becoming acceptable in California to camp out in your home.

People are losing their homes, losing their cars and losing their dignity. How are we going to afford kids clothes and school supplies for the coming year? How can we expect families to pay for all these additional costs when the economy is in the shape it in. I ask myself this everyday.…

Requests for help paying utility bills surge upward

Light switches, furnaces and water faucets aren’t the typical gauges of economic health, but at Pikes Peak United Way’s 2-1-1 call center, they tell a tale of people who continue to struggle to pay their bills in a weak economy.

According to a report released Monday by the 2-1-1 Information and Referral Hotline, requests for utility bill assistance in the fiscal year ending June 30 jumped 20 percent from the previous year, outstripping requests for help with food and rent.

“That’s by far the biggest spike in looking at data year-to-year,” said 2-1-1 Center Manager Jessica Johnson-Simmons. “I would guess it would have something to do with recent utility hikes that have gone into effect, but it’s also a case of clients just getting too overwhelmed with their……

I feel horrible; I know my kids must feel horrible,” said Maria Schultheis, who lives in the house with her husband and twin teenage sons. “I’m humiliated because I never had to live like this.”

The town water department shut off the Schultheises’ water about a month ago after the family fell behind on payments on a $1,700 overdue bill. John Schultheis — a computer programmer who has been out of work for three years — watched in disbelief as town workers turned off the water valve near the curb of his three-bedroom bungalow in a quiet middle-class neighborhood in the Lake Hiawatha section of Parsippany.

As the recession continues, utility companies say a growing number of New Jerseyans are falling behind on their electric, gas and water bills. For many, a flood of emergency funding in state and federal aid programs — coupled with a state-imposed moratorium on utility shut-offs during the winter months — has helped keep the lights on and the water flowing over the last few months.

But, with much of the state money gone and the winter moratorium ended, utility officials say more and more families like the Schultheises may be losing their electricity, gas or water service in the coming months.

“I do expect shut-off activity to increase the second part of the year,” said Victor Viscomi, PSE&G’s director of billing and revenue operations. “Some of the emergency-payment assistance money is drying up.”

PSE&G, the state’s largest utility, has seen a 10 percent increase in families behind on their payments, compared with this time last year, Viscomi said. Many of those are households that had never had a late payment until now.

you name just one origin but wont help a damn thing if we are not giving up on posession and speculation ourselves. The milenium trick applied worked out and will work out in the future if we keep going corrupting ourselves. 1.Nobody shall posess anything anymore and all must be based on sharing. This inculding both material and intellectual items. The entire world population must agree to this by understanding, acceptance and free will.
There is no need of further points or action if this can be achived and even if you say that this is impossible to achive not before other 5000 years of blood and tears it is the only way to survive as human race and to evolute as such. Those whom understood have retired already into a quite and peacful live of autonomous or self sustainability base. No one posesses religion nor a god, patents or suspicious wealth, being all those illusions or substitutes of a sick humanity passing valuable life span with this or that but not living for real.

Even the zion driven and manipulated jews are like everybodyelse so go a bit deeper please and beyond religious believes. Find out the attraction of the desert snake in the back of all religions and you may understand why we all screwed up and why we shall assist to each other to remove all power behind religions, aristrocrats, plutocrats, politics and grow free again.

Cheers to you and Hear, Hear, I agree with you wholeheardely, the collective mass in a majority will need to be in “like mindedness” and we would be able to make it happen.

well hopefully all these ppl learn to stand up and fight for basic rights and basic supply granted by the constitution. We truly MUST hate the world we builded or allowed to exist and yet all you waking ppl dont even know how hard ppl got to fight for survival in other places of the world corrupted by the US empire behaviour and dirty games of all those you call heroes and successful symbols of your society. Wouldnt it even better to smash it all into thousands pieces and start all over again? You want it or not, there is a radical revolution coming and the once profit loving individuals discovered as the sons of anti christ and slaughtered one by one. The sad thing with this dump folks is that they have been driven by their own hungry soul to be better than others by surface because this is what have been promoted everywhere.
May this false world disapear better today than tomorrow. Its about time we evolute.

It is time we stopped giving billions to Pakistan where it is wasted in purchasing arms to start and fight future war with India

It is amazing to see that American government (as well as precedent) are capable of spending up to 700 thousand million dollars a year on arms expenditure. (that is more half of arms expenditure across the world). And these expenses are going to continue augmenting. At the same time, honest people sleep on the street. Whole districts fall into decay. They would very well have was possible raise people and not banks.

Whose side is the U.S. government on??

Hundreds of billions of U.S. tax dollars are easily squandered in the useless wars of Iraq and Afghanistan. In zeros those dollars look like this: $100,000,000,000s, and 10X makes a Trillion dollars.

Another $700,000,000,000 (billions) was directed towards bank bailouts, etc.

You have a clearly undefended border with Mexico, allowing even more illegal invaders to swamp the once great U.S.A. and squat in any U.S. town/city they choose. The state of Arizona attempts to strengthen their position by imposing laws to thwart illegal aliens, YET, the federal gov’t, whose role is to protect their own U.S. citizens, throws a “monkey wrench” into Arizona’s legal machinery that effectively nullifies further progress in that matter.

…and yet American-born U.S. citizens must live under those blue tarps above, or other tent cities, or have their working-class homes without water/electricity???

Something is seriously wrong with this picture!

Every year, all cost for homes raise so high. Alot people can’t catch up the prices, so they can’t pay bill.

If these folks had bought housing they could afford, they would probably still be living not like 3rd world residents, of course their “friends” might look down on them for living in a smaller more practical house.
