Kids in the crosshairs: Photo of Palestinian children killed by IDF wins World Press Photo award

A picture of two Palestinian children killed in an Israeli airstrike has won the 2012 World Press Photo award. And as if to further prove the danger to the region’s youth, an IDF sniper has posted a photo of a child in his rifle’s scope to Instagram.

'Dead Palestinian Children' by Paul Hansen.

A procession of wailing men carrying two Palestinian children to their funeral, captured with the click of a camera, has won the 2012 World Press Photo.

The photo was taken by the Swedish photographer Paul Hansen, working for the Dagens Nyheter newspaper.

Taken in Gaza on November 20, 2012, the photo shows a group of men marching the dead bodies of a brother and sister, wrapped in white cloth, through the city. The piece portrays what became a common scene on the ground during Israel’s eight-day military conquest, Operation Pillar of Defense, against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

One of photojournalism’s most prestigious competitions, the World Press Photo awarded work this year in nine categories to 54 photographers of 32 nationalities.

This prize is the highest honor you can get in the profession,” Hansen said, “I’m very happy, but also very sad. The family lost two children and the mother is unconscious in a hospital.

In all, 103,481 images were submitted for the contest by 5,666 photographers from 124 countries.

Hansen was given a  €10,000 prize and an exhibition in April in Amsterdam.

‘Constant target’ – Instagram reveals

Pictures of Israelis targeting Palestinians have also been posted on Instagram in recent weeks. A snapshot posted at the end of January shows the back of a young man’s head in the crosshairs of a rifle. The picture, posted to IDF sniper Mor Ostrovski’s account along with others, does not show whether or not the individual on the image was shot down.

But even so, the photo caused outrage on the Internet after making the rounds on Twitter and elsewhere. “It embodies the idea that Palestinian children are targets,” wrote Palestinian rights activist Ali Abunimah on electronicintifada.net.

I’m kind of suspicious. I know that some palestinian outlets have been busted for staging photos. Hamas is also known for using human shields. Including children. As for the one in the cross hairs, I can’t tell that that is a child. From the looks of him he is closer to a man, just based on what I can see. Also wonder if it is photoshopped as well. IDF isn’t perfect by no means and no child should ever be targeted. In the same breath no child should be thrust in front of a soldier. I don’t care what religion, no child should die. But let us not forget about the five year old little boy who come running up to a US military checkpoint with a bomb strapped to the little fella. Thank GOD the soldiers didn’t shoot him and they were able to STOP him from blowing himself up. The child had no idea it was a bomb. The evil men who sent him told him that if he would hit the button that flowers would pop out like a jack in the box that he could give to the soldiers. He had no malice in his heart for the American soldiers. He admired them. But Islamic extremists wanted to see soldiers dead bad enough that they would sacrifice a five year old little boy but didn’t have the BALLS to do it themselves. Love that about radical Islam. They got the balls to talk but they aint got the balls to walk and do their own dirty work. So much for what THEY believe. If you believe the shit you are spewing you’ll live it. Apparently they don’t.

A sniper has no reason to target a child ,unless he or she has become a enemy combatant.Shooting at civilians is not a acceptable target, we are not fighting a army but a group of like minded people who are wageing a war against us and others from non specific targets, their is not a front line or a battel group .We must fight a covert war to win but killing innocents and breaking our own laws is not a answer.Drone strikes are also a dangerous path to go down attacking in countries we are not at war with, not wise policy.

What you miss in the picture is the dead father, being carried just behind the babies. How can many well thinking people ignore what has been going on overthere for decades.
