Protecting the lion to feed on people's means of livelihood, so, who will protect the people?
When hunting depletes all the "game," then wealthy business people will hunt Maasai people, then eventually each other.
They will gasp and choke as clouds of noxious gases denude vegetation which leaves the planet without a natural system to produce O2 conducive to sentient existence.

It's hard to tell which ones the animal
Prevention instead of compensation after-the-fact. Provide an animal, wild pig, or something besides what the Maasai farm and release one "neutered" animal once a week or so into the area between the lions and the tribe. Prevention is better than giving some compensation after the death of a tribe's animal.
