A second act of cannibalism has allegedly occurred in Maryland, not even a week after the face-eating incident in Miami. Police say a college student has admitted to killing a man, then eating his heart and portions of his brain. It appears to be a continuation of strange violent occurrences that the media is referring to as a real-life “zombie apocalypse.”

Less than a week after a naked Miami man was killed by police while attacking a homeless man and consuming part of his face, a Maryland man who consumed the heart and part of the brain of his victim has been arrested for murder. It is just the latest in a series of bizarre attacks that have occurred in the past few weeks. Along with a few other odd stories, like the fear of radioactive tuna in California and a hazmat scare at a Florida school, it is part of what the media has begun referring to as the “zombie apocalypse.”

In fact, the Christian Post’s title on the Maryland cannibalistic murder led off with “Zombie Apocalypse Continues…”

According to the Baltimore Sun, 21-year-old Alexander Kinyua, a Morgan State University electrical engineering student, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder after admitting to killing, then eating the heart and part of the brain of a man that was staying with his family. Kinyua’s father had reported 37-year-old Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie missing the previous Friday. While following up leads that led back to the Kinyua home, police initially discovered Agyei-Kodie’s severed head and hands. After Kinyua’s confession to the killing and acts of cannibalism, more remains were later discovered at a church in a garbage container.

At present, police know of no motive for the student to have have murdered the Ghanian national. However, inconsistencies in the statements provided by the family have detectives looking into whether or not certain members had knowledge of or perhaps participated in the murder and subsequent acts.

Authorities are also consulting with the FBI’s behavioral unit on the case.

Harford County Sheriff Jesse Bane said of the bizarre incident: “I’ve been with the agency 40 years, and I would say this is the first time I can remember … where someone was placed under arrest in Harford County and as part of his crime he consumed the victim.”

Bane said he hoped to never encounter such a crime again.

Kinyua’s alleged act of cannibalism occurs less than a week after Rudy Eugene, a man believed to be intoxicated on “bath salts,” attacked a homeless man in Miami, Fla. After being spotted naked walking down the street, according to the Miami Herald, witnesses later stated that he attacked a sleeping homeless man. When police arrived at the scene, Eugene was straddling a supine body and chewing at the man’s face. He refused to stop attacking the man after being warned to back away and was shot. However, witnesses attest that he continued the assault, whereupon the officer shot him several more times.

The victim was later identified as 65-year-old Ronald Poppo. Although expected to survive the attack, much of Poppo’s face was torn away in the brutal attack and will require extensive reconstructive surgery.

The press almost immediately dubbed Eugene the “Miami Zombie.” When coupled with several other stories of bizarre attacks, some began referring to the series of incidents as the “zombie apocalypse,” a term used to describe the post-apocalyptic future world where civilization has collapsed and the land is overrun by marauding, usually cannibalistic zombies.

The Maryland cannibal case followed an incident in New Jersey where a 43-year-old man allegedly disemboweled himself in front of police officers and then threw pieces of his own intestines and flesh at them. According to Huffington Post, Hackensack police say that Wayne Carter allegedly barricaded himself inside his home Sunday, forcing police to knock down his door to get to him. They found him in a corner, where he refused to leave, subsequently stabbing himself multiple times. He threw bits of himself at the police even after they pepper-sprayed him and attempted to subdue him. The officers retreated and called in the Bergen County SWAT team, who subdued the man.

Carter was immediately taken to the hospital, where he was last listed in critical condition. He was not initially charged, pending further investigation into the strange incident.

Earlier in May, an 18-year-old Illinois woman was bitten in the face by a man that threatened to kill her if she called the police. He was later arrested for domestic battery. A few days later, a man outside San Diego, Calif., bit the end of the nose off of his cousin after a day-long altercation turned physically violent.
