The world’s largest industrial tunnel drilling machine has come to an abrupt halt after encountering an unknown type of debris beneath the city of Seattle

Named after Birtha Knight, Seattle’s first female mayor, the massive underground tunnel drilling machine is currently undergoing troubles beneath the damp metropolis.

Massive $80M Underground Tunnel Drill Stopped Dead Beneath Seattle After Striking Something

According to reports, “Big Birtha” is on stand down after encountering an unknown type of debris preventing the $80M robotic earthworm from completing its 10,000 foot long anticipated dig.

The boring machine stopped about one-tenth of the way down the planned tunnel in an unanticipated event, said officials. While problems can always arise, the machinery should be able to handle anything this world throws at it.

Teams are currently inspecting the rig before allowing it to continue on its path to finish the tunnel under the city.

The 1.7 mile long tunnel will house a massive double-decker highway under the city replacing the seriously dilapidated viaduct.

The technology implored with this drill clearly proves that the existence of massive military grade underground bases is possible.

A CBS News except reads:

Big Bertha doesn’t just drill – it installs concrete wall panels as it goes, leaving a finished tunnel behind.

“This is a work of art,” said Hauser. “This is absolutely a work of art and it’s going to be beautiful when it’s finished.”

The $3 billion tunnel is scheduled to carry traffic by the end of 2015 but engineers always knew they could run into obstacles.

As of now it’s unknown exactly when drilling will resume.
