A government prosecutor says former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf will be arrested in connection with the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto if he returns to the country.

Prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali told reporters in Islamabad on Saturday that there is no need for any “fresh arrest warrants” for him as a court has already issued orders for his arrest.

The Federal Investigation Agency, an agency investigating the assassination of Bhutto in a gun and bomb attack in the city of Rawalpindi in 2007, is seeking to arrest Musharraf since he has been accused of failure to take proper security measures to protect the former Pakistani prime minister.

Shortly after the assassination, Musharraf said the Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) killed Bhutto. But the prosecution argues that the former Pakistani strongman was involved in the assassination plot.

However, Musharraf’s spokesman, Fawad Chaudhry, asserted that the arrest warrant for Musharraf had no legal value.

“We have challenged this arrest warrant in a court,” he said.

Musharraf, who is the leader of the All Pakistan Muslim League, has announced that he plans to return home later this month to take part in the next parliamentary elections, which are scheduled to be held later this year.

Musharraf has been living in London and Dubai since 2008.
