The ongoing clampdown on pro-democracy protesters in Ukraine can be traced to the United States as its “dirty hands” are behind the violence in the former Soviet country, an analyst tells Press TV.

“Washington absolutely told the Kiev putschists to do this when John Brennan, the CIA head, went to Kiev in mid-April followed by Joe Biden, the US vice president, telling the Ukrainians there to fight this kind of a dirty war against these people in eastern Ukraine,” Stephen Lendman, author and radio host from Chicago, said in a Saturday interview with Press TV.

Lendman noted that militants who had previously operated in Syria have now been transferred to Ukraine “to commit atrocities against ordinary people in eastern Ukraine.”

On May 29, a source in the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces told ITAR-TASS news agency that about 300 militants who had been fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad were involved in the military operation against pro-Moscow activists in southeastern Ukraine.

The commentator also pointed out that Washington’s complicity in the current Ukrainian turmoil becomes more evident in light of the deployment of Blackwater mercenaries to Ukraine as “trained killers” to support Kiev’s military operation against pro-Russians.

Earlier this month, German press, including Bild am Sonntag and Der Spiegel, said some 400 elite commandos from Blackwater, a private American military contracting firm, were involved in the military operation against the pro-Russia protesters in Ukraine.

Lendman also described pro-Moscow demonstrators as “freedom fighters,” saying they are fighting for democracy.

“They just want basic and human and civil rights, democracy, the real thing that everyone deserves, and because of this America opposes them, sending these horrid people to fight them and to murder them and to commit atrocities,” he added.

The acting Kiev government has been staging military operations in the eastern and southern provinces since mid-April in a bid to root out pro-Russia demonstrations.
