Comedian Jim Carrey Takes A Verbal Swipe At Monsanto

Comedian and Hollywood star, Jim Carrey, decided a college graduation speech would be a great place to take a stab at the Monsanto company for suing small farmers for ‘violating’ their patents on crops seeds. There’s no telling how Carrey found out about Monsanto, but the huge March Against Monsanto protests that took place over the weekend may have given him the confidence to speak about the controversial subject that most of Hollywood seems to ignore. Perhaps he is taking the lead from Russell Brand, who tweeted about the march to his 7 million plus followers, or perhaps he saw #EndMonsanto trending across social media on Saturday and looked into it for the first time.

“I’m here to plant a seed today,” Carrey stated while delivering the commencement address. “A seed that will inspire you to go forward in your life with enthusiastic hearts and a clear sense of wholeness. The question is, will that seed have a chance to take root or will I be sued by Monsanto?”

The longtime comedy star was of course referring to Monsanto’s horrific practice of taking small farmers to court, patent trolling to the extreme level to ensure their corporate profits, this despite humanitarian claims by the company which claims to be trying to end world hunger. As documented by the Huffington Post in February 2013, Monsanto has filed over 144 lawsuits against 410 farmers and 56 small farm businesses in at least 27 U.S. States.
