In the scenario: A school bus is en route to an event when suddenly it’s hijacked! A camera inside the bus captured the whole thing while an audience of school teachers, administrators and transportation directors watched it all unfold on a live feed.
The hijacker even tied some of the students up and told them to keep their heads down. The bus eventually ended up at Owens Center for Emergency Preparedness.That’s where first responders and SWAT teams were ready to move in.
“Every driver, administrator will take something away from this saying that this could actually happen on my bus. That’s what our focus was. This could happen on any bus”, says Jeff Culler, Rossford Schools Transportation Director
Organizers say planning for the drill began in May.
Before all the Police conspiracy nuts jump on the bandwagon, use a little common sense here. The article made it clear that this was a drill and had been in planning since May. The kids were student actors and all had parent waivers for them to participate. Students, staff and Police all came away with a better understanding of the realitiy of such a situation and how to deal with it.
This sort of proactive training is commonplace in many jurisdictions where Police are working with schools and other groups to prepare for worst case scenarios. “Every 15 Minutes” is a typical example of such active training involving student actors. A DUI fatal accident scene is used and students watch their friends playing the role of drunks who are killed. It is a very effective simulation. With the recent scholol shooting chaos, many jurisdictions have gone to full training of school staff in “Active Shooter” incidents. All onsite staff at a school are over a two day period taught theory, procedures and put through an “active shooter” simulation. This is the type of partnership, not conspiracy, many law enforcement agencies are developing with the stakeholders in their community. Sorry folks, bo boogy man behind this curtain.
