I read that when the MiG delegation was in Britain, they wanted to buy a Rolls-Royce jet engine. To make it sporting, the brits suggested that they play snooker or pool for it: if the Russians won, the brits would sell them one. Obviously, the Russians won, but their problem wasn't solved yet. They didn't have good enough alloys to stand the temperatures that were generated. So they asked for a tour of the plant where the engines were made. One of their group wore a pair of shoes with crepe-rubber soles, sticky enough to pick up shards from the milling machine that was cutting blades. Between the design of the engine and the composition of the alloys, the Russians were off and running.

The russians could have defeated the Nazis and occupy all Europe in 1939-40-41 if it wasnt for Stalines purges. I could be writing in russian now and the educational system could be 100 years more advanced. Well… Maybe not. Probably my grandfathers and grandmothers would die fighting the invasion… and I wouldnt be watching this excellent documentary.

very nice docu… the germans/russians/japanese hated everyone so they had to build weapons… the americans/british loved everyone so they had to build weapons…
only second to "murica aviation power………………………ta-ta-ta—–ta-ta-ta "murica was at around the 4th or 5th aviation power back then (even lagging behind The Japanese Empire(having in mind their lack of resources whatsoever)). I, personally, would compare their relentless spirit of hyper activeness and unfortunately a false sense of purpose with the old Russian notion of "мужик – mudzighk in INGALISH :P" (commonly used during the rise of the soviet era and before, referring to a strong and hard working, young man). Although the more recent use of the word (which mostly suits the above mentioned society ('muricans)) is that of a STUPID and DUMB AS* hard working people, usually used by some higher, but still low level authority for it's own gain.
