I highly doubt the Soviet/Russian equipment would shut down after 50 miles into West Germany. There would also be equal losses regarding the air campaign. Nothing but US propaganda.
What fantasy! The Soviets never would have accepted a ground war against NATO, without integrating their nuclear option into it the advance from the beginning.
Also, no president or soviet leader would be crazy enough to rachet things up to a nuclear confrontation. Like Carl Sagan said, Nuclear MADD theory puts our fates in each others hands.
